Role-space: You’ve Heard the Term But What Does It Mean?

Understand the concept of Role-Space and apply it to your work in the educational setting. Although this online community specifically targets educational interpreting settings, this information can be applied to interpreters working in a variety of settings. Don’t let the title fool you – Redefining the Role of the Community Interpreter: The Concept of Role-space (Llewellyn-Jones & Lee, 2014). This info can be applied to interpreters working in a variety of settings, including K-12 and post-secondary settings! It’s about how we present ourselves to people in a way that is socially appropriate and linguistically accurate – a discourse approach to our work (rather than “pretend I’m not here”). For experienced interpreters, this info will probably not strike you as new but the terminology and the research should help validate the choices you make on a daily basis.

During the 5 weeks of this interactive online learning community, you will have the opportunity to:

  • Discuss your learning and understanding of each chapter in the required text via interactive discussion forums. In preparation for each discussion, you will study each chapter and view a video (no longer than 5 minutes) to introduce the topic.
  • Synthesize your learning and discuss possible applications by summarizing each chapter summary for other participants.
  • Apply your learning by completing a self-reflective project where you apply Role-Space to your work. This is a self-analysis of your role, not your interpreting skills and includes creating an online poster and one-page reflection. Specific info will be given at the beginning of the Learning Community. Project is due the last week of the Learning Community. Individual office hours (via Skype) will be available during the 5-week event for support on this project.
  • Specific Pre-requisite skills/knowledge: Experience interpreting in an educational setting (K-12 or post-secondary).
  • Languages: This online Learning Community is accessible via spoken English with captions.

Facilitator Bio: Christine Monikowski, PhD  

  • Ph.D., University of New Mexico, Educational Linguistics, 1994
  • M.A., University of New Mexico, Linguistics, 1991
  • M.A., Gallaudet College, Counseling,1978
  • B.S., Shippensburg State College, Secondary Education, 1973

Dr. Monikowski’s published works include Evolving Paradigms in Interpreter Education co-edited with Elizabeth Winston (Gallaudet University Press, 2013) and Service Learning in Interpreting Education co-authored with Rico Peterson (Oxford University Press, 2005). Her most recent volume is titled Teaching and Learning: Grounded in Research (Gallaudet University Press 2017)it is a series of interviews conducted with sign language educators/researchers in the U.S., Canada, and Europe. In 2013, Dr. Monikowski was Fulbright Specialist (under the auspices of the U.S. Department of State) in Australia at the University of Newcastle’s Royal Institute for Deaf Blind Children/Renwick Center and spent six weeks Down Under. In the spring of 2016 she was a Short-term Research Fellow at Trinity College Dublin. In December 2017, Professor Monikowski retired from her position in higher education but continues to present workshops for interpreters and interpreter educators on a variety of topics such as: Discourse Analysis for Interpreters, Introduction to Linguistics for Interpreters, and Professional Ethics. She also continues to work as an interpreter.
