Context, Cues and Communication Strategies:

A practical application of discourse analysis for interpreting

Understanding discourse and discourse analysis is essential for interpreters, interpreter educators, and frankly, for anyone who participates in communication! Communication and interpreting are, after all, nothing more nor less than discourse analysis in action. In this webinar, we explore discourse as language in use, exploring four major themes in discourse analysis: 1) emerging meaning; 2) interaction; 3) a series of choices and decisions; and 4) context. Although the primary focus is on topics especially relevant to ASL/English interpreters, educators, and consumers, it is relevant to anyone interested in the study of interpreting and translating. Join us in discussion about discourse analysis, and its applications and implications for interpreters, educators, and consumers.

During the 2 weeks of this interactive online learning community, you will have the opportunity to:

  • Discuss four major ideas about discourse analysis (emerging meaning, interaction, language choices and decisions, and the impact of context) based on your reading of supplied materials. Discussion occurs via online forums.
  • Synthesize your understanding and learning through optional summaries of discussions and readings.
  • Apply your learning to interpreting, interpreter education, and consumer needs, through discussion and optional projects.
  • Provide input to us, as authors and educators, about how to enhance our upcoming text.
  • Specific Pre-requisite skills/knowledge: Experience interpreting and or teaching interpreting.
  • Languages: This online Learning Community is accessible via written English readings. Discussion forums may also include ASL and/or International Sign Language postings-participants need to supply written English translations.

Logistics & Materials

  • Required Text: None! Note that the discussions are based on Part 1 of our up-coming text: Discourse Analysis: Context, Cues and Communication Strategies: A practical application of discourse analysis for interpreting! The relevant chapters will be provided online for every participant. We look forward to your input as we finalize our text!
  • Interactive online discussions: To facilitate active online discussions, registration is typically limited to between 8-15 people.
  • Cost: $195.00 (Returning TIEM webinar participants receive 20% discount!).
    • Webinar Refunds: 50% refund if requested in writing 15 days before start of event; no other refunds are available, unless the webinar is canceled due to low enrollment (less than 8, at discretion of Facilitator).
  • Times: At your own convenience during the dates, but there are specific times/dates for assignments.

These are provided as a part of your registration fee, but each participant must track and submit documentation at the end of the webinar in order to receive RID CEUs. More information about this process will be provided at the beginning of the webinar.

Facilitator Bios:

Dr. Betsy Winston is the Director of the Teaching Interpreting Educators and Mentors (TIEM) Center, a Center focused on excellence and integrity in interpreter and mentor education and research. Her areas of expertise include teaching and research in interpreting, curriculum development, assessment and evaluation, English and ASL discourse analysis, interpreting skills development, educational interpreting, multimedia applications in ASL research and teaching, and teaching at a distance. She holds a Ph.D. in Applied Linguistics from Georgetown University, an M.A. in Linguistics with a focus in American Sign Language from Gallaudet University, and an M.Ed. in Technology & Education from Western Governors University. Dr. Winston has been honored by CIT and RID in 2000 with the Mary Stotler Award, for her contributions to the field of Interpreter Education; in 2016, she received the Outstanding Service to Interpreting award from NAD, as a member of the RID Certification Committee.

Dr. Cynthia B. Roy holds a PhD from Georgetown University in Sociolinguistics and is retired from Gallaudet University where she served as the PhD Program Coordinator for 5 years.  She has been an interpreter for over 30 years.  She has interpreted in a variety of settings.  She has provided interpreting services in several states and the District of Columbia.  She has taught interpreting at the undergraduate and graduate level for over 35 years.  While at Gallaudet University she supervised a number of MA graduate research projects and served in various capacities on PhD thesis committees.  Her research foci are discourse analysis of interpreted encounters and gender. Her publications include Interpreting as a Discourse Process (1990), several refereed articles, and the Interpreter Education series.
